Celebrate Christmas New Orleans Style!
The entire city is aglow with twinkling lights during the holiday season. Decked with bells and boughs of holly, New Orleans is the perfect place to be during Christmas. Marked by classic traditions that were born on this land, Christmas celebrations go way back in this city.
Be it a stroll through the French Quarter, or displays of millions of twinkling lights at the ancient Oaks, the city is geared up to welcome the much-awaited Santa.
Here’s how to celebrate Christmas New Orleans style.
Being the melting pot of French, African and American cultures, this city has a traditional cuisine with an ethnic flavor. In spirit of the festive occasion, restaurants all over the city offer elaborate four-course holiday meals that include a variety of dishes. Some Christmas specialties include crystallized fruits, meringues, eggnog, sugar sculptures and pastries.
This Creole dining experience can be traced back to the 1800s when the Creole families feasted extravagantly to break their fast. After returning from midnight mass at St. Louis Cathedral on Christmas Eve, families dined together in celebration of the event. Today, the delicacies served include both Creole recipes and contemporary delicacies.
Celebration In The Oaks
The City Park is known for hosting one of the best light festivals in the country. Ancient, centuries-old oaks are embellished with millions of twinkling lights that bring the aging trees to life! Just roaming around the park and enjoying the ornamental light displays is a mesmerizing experience.
The poinsettia exhibition in the Botanical Gardens truly transforms the park into a winter wonderland. The bright poinsettias displayed amidst fantastical woodland scenes are the highlight of this classical garden. Moreover, the garden railway display offers rides on miniature trains that add to the fun-packed holiday surprises that this place holds.
To mark the arrival of Christmas every year, this event is hosted at New Orleans Convention Center. Each year, NOLA Christmasfest offers a night full of adventures and ice-skating in its indoor ice skating rink. This is truly one of the most magical experiences to look forward to for Christmas Eve.
Along with carnival rides, ice slides, carousels, inflatables, curling lanes and polar golf, the event will also be featuring World’s Tallest Snowman this year!
Walking across gingerbread houses standing on paths lined with decorated trees, and meeting Santa and his friends is an exhilarating one-of-a-kind experience right out of a storybook. It is no surprise that families rush to get tickets for this festival as soon as bells are heard jingling.
